Vehicle Description

This 1970 Dodge Challenger T/A coupe is one of approximately 2,400 examples built to homologate the model for SCCA Trans-Am competition, making it one of the most purpose-built muscle cars of its era. Finished in Bright Red over a red vinyl interior, it retains the aggressive factory T/A appearance while incorporating a rebuilt and enlarged powertrain. The car underwent a rotisserie refurbishment around 2014 after spending years in Virginia and was acquired by the current owner in 2020. It is now offered with refurbishment records, photos, manufacturer’s literature, a copy of the broadcast sheet, and a clean California title.

The exterior showcases all signature Challenger T/A elements, including a matte-black fiberglass hood with raised scoop, blacked-out grille and tail panel, side-exit dual exhaust, hood pins, “chin spoiler” front air dam, and a ducktail rear spoiler. Chrome bumpers, dual side mirrors, and a flip-up fuel door add factory detail, while a noted paint blemish appears behind the driver-side rear window. The overall look remains unmistakably aggressive and track-inspired.

It rides on body-color 15-inch steel wheels with bright hubcaps and trim rings, wrapped in BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires sized 225/60 in the front and 235/60 in the rear. The Rallye Suspension package includes upgraded sway bars, heavy-duty shock absorbers, and revised rear spring geometry, giving the car improved handling for its era. Braking is handled by power-assisted front discs and rear drums.

Inside, the cabin features red vinyl bucket seats, a rear bench, woodgrain trim accents, a center console, and a Hurst pistol-grip shifter. A factory-style heater remains in place, while the clock, radio, and windshield wipers are noted as inoperable. The interior preserves a raw, functional muscle car character consistent with its competition-bred intent.

The driver is met with a woodgrain steering wheel and Rallye gauge cluster, including a 150-mph speedometer, 8,000-rpm tachometer, analog clock, and combination gauge set for fuel, temperature, amperage, and oil pressure. The five-digit odometer shows 86,000 miles, with approximately 500 added under current ownership; total mileage is unverified.

Power comes from a replacement 340ci LA V8 built during the 2014 refurbishment. The engine has been enlarged to 422 cubic inches via a .060-inch overbore and 4.00-inch stroke, and is fitted with triple Holley two-barrel carburetors, an Edelbrock intake manifold, aftermarket valvetrain components, and period-style orange finishes. This configuration retains the spirit of the original T/A engine while significantly increasing displacement and output.

Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission, with the underside of the vehicle refinished in red during restoration work. This Challenger T/A combines documented provenance, competition heritage, and enhanced performance, offering a striking example of Mopar’s homologation-era engineering and muscle car identity.
